The answer to this question is complicated.
With Flight Simulator experience and appropriate add-ons, you could learn enough to operate an airliner with help from the ground or an instructor. People have actually done this (using full-motion simulators, not actual aircraft), so it is not in dispute. In fact, you don't even need Flight Simulator experience; all you need is the ability to push buttons, turn knobs, and follow instructions precisely, all of which almost anyone of normal intelligence can do today.
The reason for this is that modern airliners are very heavily automated. It's possible to fly them to their destinations and land without touching the flight controls (yoke, rudder, etc.). The only part of flying that requires practice is flying manually with the flight controls, so by eliminating that necessity with automation, it becomes possible for a non-pilot to fly the plane as long as he receives instructions from a pilot (by radio or in the cockpit).
Ironically, this is possible only for large airliners, because only they have enough automation to make flight and landing possible without using the flight controls. A non-pilot would have a very tough time landing a small airplane, because small airplanes have very little automation, and it isn't possible to fly and land them entirely without touching the controls. And once you touch the controls, you need a lot of practice to fly the plane safely.
So, yes, it's possible to fly a big airliner without actual flying experience provided that (1) the airplane is heavily automated, such as a large commercial airliner; (2) there is a source of help available (a qualified pilot on the radio or preferably in the cockpit); and (3) there is nothing actually wrong with the airplane itself, and no unusual circumstances exist (severe winds at the airport, lack of autoland-certified instrument approaches to the airport, etc.). Having experience in Flight Simulator would help, but it wouldn't be necessary, as the actual procedure would simply consist of carrying out the instructions one is given by a pilot.
The answer is no for smaller aircraft, because of their lack of automation, as mentioned above. In a small Cessna you'd have to fly by hand, which requires practice, and it wouldn't be possible for someone to help you fly by hand just by radio鈥攃hances are that you'd still crash or make a very rough landing. Flight Simulator experience would help you understand how to fly, but the lack of actual practice would still tend to produce an unhappy result.
For all types of aircraft, the answer would be no if you had no help. That is, in an airliner, there are systems that are not modeled in the simulator, and you'd have to know about those systems, which you wouldn't unless you had an instructor. And flying a small plane would be difficult if you had no instructor to correct your mistakes; flight simulation would help a bit, but you'd still get into trouble fairly easily, with unfortunate consequences.
No you could not land the craft. flight simulator is fun but it leaves a lot of thing out for real flying. What hardware is needed to run Flight Simulator X Best?
My computer is a pentium D 3.2GHz, 1GB Ram, 320GB HDD, GeForce 7600GS (256Mb) and a year old and it cannot run flight simulator X unless all graphics options are turned off. Is this right because it's well above the system requirements for the game. What can i do to improve my system? What are these new physics accelerators? FSX is a high demanding game. It may require DX10 support, not too sure I don't care for the series.

Flight Simulator X is a absolutely fantastic flight simulator for the pc. With flying experience myself in real life, the realism is unbelievable. I havent tried XPLANE yet but thats good aswell - it takes 60 GIGS of hard drive space!! Thats whats put me off lol.

Flight Simulator 2004 install error?
I have just bought the Flight Simulator 2004 game, and when I get to the third disc of the instalation, it says "Setup failed to extract files from D:\MSGAME7.CAB. This is most likely caused by low memory (low disc space by swapping file) or a corrupted cabinet file. Please restart your machine and run setup again.". I recently purchased one of your games, Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold Edition. I spent quite a lot of money on it, to find out that my desktop couldn’t cope very well with the high levels of graphics that the game offered. I placed the graphics options on minimal (the very lowest), and the game now runs slightly better, but I still cannot experience the full gameplay that the game offers. I have now purchased a new laptop, and downloaded the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Demo Version from the internet. The game works very well, even with the graphics on “Ultra High”! But I have already registered the game on my desktop. Does this mean that I will not be able to register it on my laptop? I see it as a bit of a waste of money if I am not allowed to use the game on my desktop. If I uninstall it from the desktop, will I then be able to install and register it on the laptop? so i'm nearing the last year of high school and will be having to go to university in two years. I bought microsoft flight simulator x and when I install it, it's no where to be found on my computer?
It installs and you can play it but the second you close it you can't get it back without installing it again. Normally when you install something an icon is created on the desktop, but there is nothing. Even under programs there's nothing at all about the flight simulator even though it took an hour to install. Do you have to install the game for an hour every time you want to play it or what? Flight Simulator 2004 add-ons question?
I got Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight. On www.ign.com it says that that are about 8-9 add-ons for this game. I want to know if the add-ons like"Flight Deck Version 4.0" are whole separate games or if they load the planes and ships or whatever is in that game into Flight Simulator. I just don't want to spend my money on a game that i won't even play

I just bought an Hp Slimline 5510f that has 3g ram and 650g of hard drive. It has 220 watt so i was wandering with an upgraded PCI-E low profile graphics card, could I still run Flight Simulator X efficiently? My son is seriously interested in becoming an airline pilot, he never stops asking questions and reading up on this profession therefore, I am looking to purchase (xmas gift) a "realistic" game/program for use on the laptop - any recommendation please?

Flight simulator is cool, but IL2: Sturmovik is the single most realistic flight sim i have ever seen. When you crash your plane in Flight sim, it just stops. Crash in IL2 and bits fly everywhere and the pilot has the potential to die,or live depending on the severity of the crash. My grandfather flew a F4U1-C Corsair in WWII for the marines and he says that it is scary how close the game comes to real life. This is however a WWII flight sim, but if you can fly the ensign killer, you can fly just about anything! Also, Flight SImulator X has some pretty high system requirements, and prolly won't run on a laptop.

Why does my computer restart after running flight simulator for a long time?
I do long flights on Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I usually takeoff, go to bed and wake up 8 hours later and land. Lately, my computer seems to be incapable of running the game for this long. When I go to bed, I minimize flight sim and turn off the screen. I get up, turn on the screen and right when I maximize flight sim, it freezes up and restarts. It says a serious error occurred. It also restarts even when the screen is on and flight sim is running. Any ideas?Why does my computer restart after running flight simulator for a long time?
It sounds like you're running out of memory. Have you checked your task manager when running the program or run it while you leave the program on over night? Maybe don't minimize the flight simulator at all. Turning the screen off has nothing to do with it.
Run disk cleanup before you do a flight tonight. If that doesn't fix it give me a call and we can discuss other tools and procedures to keep your computer "tuned up".

Depending on the temperature at your place and the cooling your pc uses you might be overheating CPU and the PSU.
I bet it is very dusty in there too.
If that's the case, leaving it unattended and under load could be a fire hazard.

Why are my landings on Flight Simulator 2004 always bad or bumpy?
I have the game set on the most realistic option, so if I do a bad landing, I actually crash, but all of my landings look as though I just drop onto the runway or nose dive then flare.
Can anyone give me tips on how to improve my landings. I usually fly 757s, 767, 777 and A320sWhy are my landings on Flight Simulator 2004 always bad or bumpy?
You are probably flying too high and too fast before landing. That's the classic mistake made by flight simmers. It's easier to make this mistake with airliners, and since simmers usually start their flying with airliners, they are more likely to make this mistake than real pilots.
(Real-world pilots start out on tiny airplanes and work their way up to airliners, so by the time they are flying airliners, they've already learned all the basics with smaller aircraft.)
The key to landing a large airliner safely and smoothly is a stabilized approach. Long before you reach the runway, you must ensure that your approach speed is correct, and that you are aligned precisely with the runway, and that you are descending along the correct path for landing. If any of these is incorrect, you'll have trouble landing safely and smoothly.
Large aircraft are fast and slippery, so you must anticipate everything. You must set the aircraft up for a stabilized approach far in advance of reaching the airport. You cannot correct mistakes at the last minute. If the approach is not right, you must go around and try again. If you are blazing along at 290 knots a mile from the runway, there's no way you're going to slow that airplane down to a proper approach speed before you reach the threshold of the runway. If you're still 8000 feet above the field two miles from the runway, there's no way that you'll be able to descend to the runway in time to land correctly and safely.
Runway alignment is a bit less critical, since you can turn the airplane at any time. But you'll find that turning airliners and lining them up with the runway at the last minute is really, really hard, and requires a lot of experience. It's best, then, to line yourself up way in advance, while you still have plenty of wiggle room. By the time you get close to the airport, you need to be following an arrow-straight path that's precisely aligned with the runway centerline. Systems like ILS are designed specifically to help with this.
Descent rate is also important. Changing your descent rate at the last minute is very bad. If you are constantly pushing the yoke to and fro or constantly retrimming wildly with the approach lights looming in the windshield, you're on the fast track for a rendezvous with destiny, so to speak.
Another key thing to remember: In an airplane, you can descend quickly, or you can slow down quickly 鈥?but not both. So if you're coming in too high, but at the correct speed, there's no way you can get down to the correct altitude without picking up speed. And if you are at the right altitude but coming in too fast, there's no way you can slow down and still maintain that descent rate. Tiny adjustments can work, but if you try to descend and slow down significantly at the same time, the laws of physics are going to get in your way.
So set up your approach carefully and early. By the time you're on short final, or before, the airplane should be able to continue the approach smoothly down to the runway even without you touching the controls, and even with the autopilot off (provided there are no wind changes). If this is not the case, you've done something wrong.
Practice makes perfect. Eventually you can shoot approaches easily.
And yes, all of this applies in real airplanes, too. There are obviously differences between a sim and a real airplane, but all of the basic principles are the same. i have the game Flight Simulator X downloaded.
First I installed the game and then i Installed the SP1 followed by SP2 then i copied the crack and replaced them after i do that when i start the game i get an error message

I purchased the game today from a Game shop and I think I only received the flight simulator deluxe edition and not the acceleration expansion pack. Ithink there should have been two DVD boxes in the package with 3 or more discs. I only got 1 box with 2 discs inside both labelled flight simulator X deluxe edition disc 1 and 2. I downloaded a non copy-righted game called Microboft Flight Simulator.
It came in uif form so I mounted it with my virtual drive.

Flight Simulator X add-on problem?
I downloaded some files from a freeware site to add to my FSXght Simulator X game. I unzipped them with the computer's built-in "wizard", and I tried to put them into the correct files of the game, (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X). Then, I immediately get smacked with this message:
"Cannot create or replace [file name]: access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
FSX was not running.
I am on a limited account. (I personally think this is the problem.)

The other 60% are TEXTURES only.
So, People who are new, May send the file to Aircraft file. But did not send it to the said air craft texture file.
Or They did every thing right. But when they found it.
It shows the Aircraft as ? You will need to Take a Photo then send it to the textures. Name the photo "Thumbnail" And place it in side with the textures.
Or it did come with a photo, Open the texture file and see if one is. If you see one. Jpeg you will need to change the word from JPEG to Thumbnail. Then your aircraft Photo will show up.

I have a Intel i7 920 @ 2.67 (currently) an Asus P6T Motherboard with 6gbs of DDR3 ram and a Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216 896mb video card. I tried using Flight Simulator X with maxed graphics and it was really laggy and stopped running after about 30 seconds; it said it ran out of memory? I am thinking about overclocking but do I need more Memory and a better graphics card? What do I all need? the demo came with the first computer which i got between 1995-2001(i cant remember the exact date)
I can remember that at the end of the demo there was a robotic snake which i had to defeat but you cant because it is a demo.
One enemy plane had the colors blue and yellow.
I can remember I had to go through this tunnel and there were these walls closing and opening.
I can also remember that you had to go collect fuel, health and super weapons and these were spread out all over the place.

the demo came with the first computer which i got between 1995-2001(i cant remember the exact date)
I can remember that at the end of the demo there was a robotic snake which i had to defeat but you cant because it is a demo.
One enemy plane had the colors blue and yellow.
I can remember I had to go through this tunnel and there were these walls closing and opening.
I can also remember that you had to go collect fuel, health and super weapons and these were spread out all over the place.
The game was in first person view and you can see your two guns thingy at the sides
the controls were arrow keys to move and spacebar to shoot

Is my laptop good enough for games?
I have a new Dell Inspiron E1505 with the Intel Core Duo (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB). I upgraded to the middle video card which is a 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 Hyper Memory.
Can I play racing games, Call of Duty and the new Flight Simulator game on this or will not work good enough?

You can look in the settings of FS2004 to get a complete list of the current control settings. There's a default set, which you can google for easily enough, but since you can change the settings to anything you want, it's important to actually verify them in the sim to see what you have configured. It's also the easiest way to change them.
As I recall, it's something like Options | Settings | Control assignments. You have a complete list of all the possible control functions, along with the key sequences and/or joystick controls currently assigned to those functions.

It will probably be borderline. Not sure which Athlon you have, but the card is probably not that great. I downloaded the FSX demo to my Dell Inspiron 530 - it ran okay once I installed a Radeon HD 4550 card, but so far I haven't seen enough of a leap to justify ditching FS2-004 for the full FSX. If you've got the quad-core Athlon you'll have an advantage for gaming in general and likely for FSX specifically, and a card like the 4550 can be had for under $50.
You will however need a 300 watt power supply for even that card, which is actually pretty conservative for a PSU. Gaming cards tend to need upwards of 400 watts, and your system seems to have only a 250 watt power supply.
My suggestion - unless you've already gotten FSX or used it on a higher end system, I'd suggest just getting FS2004. When played on lower- end systems, an edition of FS will always look like a slower-running version of the previous ed. of FS. FS has a pretty robust support community with tons of downloads available for free.

Hey there pilots!
I've sold my motorcycle and I'm getting a private pilot's license next semester (may have to wait till summer though). I've budgeted myself for 55 hours but when the time comes I'll have enough money to go higher if I need it. The place I will be going to get instructed says they require a minimum of 40 hours but to be prepared for 55-85.
I want to be ready as much as I can when I get there so I was wondering if any of you could recommend a flight simulation game. I will be flying a Cessna (1978 Cessna 152) with a Cirrus cockpit so I guess it would have to be a 2003 game.
Before you all say anything, I realize very well that a flight simulator is in no way an adequate substitute for the real thing. I know that in real life everything is different down to my crappy little logitech joystick. I don't in any way expect that after being good at a flight simulator that I know anything about flying an aircraft. I just want to prepare myself the best I can. Flight sims are great for training. I recommend this for the private and instrument training . The Microsoft flight Sim X. I realize that it is an expensive program to run since the computer requirements are huge. But the older ones do the same basic thing. They are great fr learning how to navigate and fly real time to get familiar with pilotage and dead reckoning skills. I will also give a link for learning about VOR's and how they work.

First, get your medical out of the way first. There's no worse thing, than spending a lot of money on training, and then not being able to get your medical. Mine was about $100...
Second, check out http://www.Sportys.com/faatest - It's a great way to study toward your written. Try to devote 10 to 15 minutes a day. You can even take the practice exam to see how you are doing.
Third, join AOPA. You'll get access to a bunch of stuff that you'd otherwise have to pay for, and you get many great resources online to boot.
As for flight sims, get one with the panel of the plane you are going to be flying. I flew the 71 model 152, so MS Flight Sim 98 was fine for me.
Oh, and it's a 'Certificate', and only a 'License' to learn....

For instance, Turn coordinator, Altimeter, Heading Indicator, etc. Find out what all those do and how they relate to the plane.

MS FSX. Go to the flight training section. Fly the 172 with realism settings to realistic.
You are right that this is no replacement for the real thing, but the concepts that you will learn are the same (coordinating a turn, traffic patterns, etc.)
There is no real substitute for the feedback from the plane (pre-stall shudder can only really be experienced in real life) but this is a good one. And, when you are done with your "lesson" you can have some fun.
Congrats on the decision to get your pilot's license !!

Also, I enjoy the Microsoft speech where you can use the keyboard to communicate as you fly. Most of us were shy about using the radios when we started. However, the simulator gives a great sense of the lingo and when to say what
The cool thing is that you can set it up to fly at the airport where you will be flying out of. So there may be landmarks in your neighborhood. It helps you get used to the local area environment.
The only area i dont think Simulators work well with is winds / crosswinds. Weather works well, but to practice things like crosswind landings - in my opinion you need to buy too many gizmos (rudder pedals,etc.) to be able to adjust the sensitivities. Things like this in my opinion you'll only learn from real experience in the plane with your instructor. There is a feel to it and you'll understand it with time

Lower your flaps, this will slow you down even more so you might have to play with your throttle a little. Get it to where you have a slow steady decent. If you find you will hit the ground before you get to the runway just add a little throttle, or cut back some and raise the nose of the plane a little if it looks like you will over shoot the runway. It will take practice, I've had times when I can land a plane the first time and other times where I wreck the plane. Practice, practice, practice.Anybody able to tell me how to land an aeroplane (in game"flight simulator")?

Why does my gps in flight simulator stop working with my autopilot after a couple of flights?
Flght simulator x Boeing 737 I like to make flights and stop different places save the game file a new flight plan go somewhere else but after a while the gps stops working with the autopilot.Why does my gps in flight simulator stop working with my autopilot after a couple of flights?
Try clearing and recreating the flight plan. Maybe the multiple flight plans are clogging up the GPS when you don't load a flight from scratch.
For what it's worth, the real 737 uses a flight management computer, not a GPS. You can get add-ons for your simulator that work just the way the real 737 does, although it's a lot more complicated to fly. I recently bought 'Microsoft Flight Simulator' and have used it on my PC. The problem is it takes up a lot of memory. Is it possible to play the game on my TV (Flat screen Toshiba) with a games console or

Well, it might be possible to play Flight Simulator on your TV if your TV has the right sockets to hook a PC up to it - however, I fear this isn't really what you are hoping to achieve is it? As the game is still going to be running on your PC it wont make a jot of difference to the memory usage where you are displaying the images produced, be it your monitor or your TV (IF you can hook it up). And as Flight Simulator is only available for PC it means that you have no other choice I'm afraid. Apart from adding more memory to your PC, buying a better and bigger graphics card or even simply buying a new PC there is nothing else you can do.

Flight Simulator?
Hi, I have just bought this game second hand without instructions there is a lot of help of web but what I can't seem to find is if you do the plan of where you want to fly to and take off how do you set autopilot on to fly the route or do you have to do it manually? And the set time to go faster time how do you know how fast this is going or is it a case of just checking map when you are near the airport? And on auto pilot how do you work out Altitude, heading, speed to set it at etc. ThanksFlight Simulator?
Micro soft flight simulator 2004 has no written manual. it is all in the "game"
Start the sim, click on learning center, click on step by step instructions. when ready, go to lessons, you will be tutored on how to fly the sim.

as some have hinted, the Learning centre within Flight Simulator is a great resource to help you fly all sorts of planes, and taxi them on the ground and such. there is also lessons that you can fly, that start out with a Cessna 172SP and work up all the way to a Boeing 737-400. Some planes in FS 2004 do not have an auto pilot (most do though), to file a flight plan you have to do it through the flight planner (in game, while flying, click on File %26gt; Flight Planner), to use time accelleration (compression) hit "R" and then the "-" or "=" keys, Time Compressions comes in rates of 2x, 4x 8x, 16x, 32x, 64x and 128x. and you can choose to fly manually with a joystick (which is A LOT easier than a keyboard) or you can use the autopilot but you have to adjust the speed, heading, altitude of the autopilot yourself usually on the Boeing Jets, Autopilot controls are located at the top of the main panel, right hand side.
I would suggest you go to the tutorial section. There you will be able to learn to fly the small aircraft all the way up to the big jets. Start off small and build you way up. It is much more enjoyable that way.Flight Simulator?

It makes flying a lot more enjoyable. It also makes it easier to fly. Controlling the a/c with the keyboard, while not impossible, is very hard to do and have fun (that's my opinion). There are several sources for downloading new aircraft and other files that will make sim flying fun. The main site I use is www.avsims.com There are a lot of virtual airlines and military flyer's out there. These are groups that fly as a group online and individually off line preforming flights and missions. Good luck and happy flying.
Your flight plan should be set through the FMC. I cant really say more as i dont have more information on what kind of aircraft it is. If you want to make the time faster then go to options and time compression you will see 2x 4x, 8x and more..If you want to check your map go to flights and map...
