How was flight simulator games created?

(historical)How was flight simulator games created?
By programmers willing to invest a lot of time modelling an airplane, really.

The first popular flight sim for PC / Apple II, the subLOGIC FS1, looks like it's built from LEGO blocks. The resolution's so low, it's laughable by today's standards.

FS2 is a massive improvement, but is still low res. On the other hand, it also simulated a lot more, including NAV aids like VOR, ILS, and more.
