The current flight simulators available on the market for PC:

- Microsoft Flight Simulator X (Windows, requires powerful PC)

- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (Windows, runs on older PCs)

- X-Plane (Windows)

- Flight Gear (Linux)

the first 3 have the largest market share, especially the 2nd in the list. If you like Boeing and Airbus I suggest you go for the Microsoft FS line. I also suggest you begin learning the basics of flying with smaller a/c taking the lessons (on the FS) before tackling the bigger airliners.

The standard product only comes with easy to fly (very unreal) models that do not have the markings of any real-life airline. If you want that you have to download freeware a/c or liveries and install them yourself. Plenty of that at http://www.avsim.com among other sites. None of them is going to give you the "variety" of airlines, you get them.

Then if you don't give up and really like it configure it to maximum realism settings. Using the FS with the keyboard is not just unreal but very cumbersome, so if you are serious about it invest in a flight simulator yoke and pedals (CH Products or Saitek) and a Throttle Quadrant (thrust and flaps levers plus additional buttons).

If you are even more serious you would commit to learning about procedures (maneuvers, radio communication, aviation theory, etc.) and join an online flying/air-traffic-control organization such as IVAO or VATSIM.

If you are really really serious you would invest more money in buying payware aircraft that simulate most systems of a real a/c and even buy yourself hardware items such an MCP (the autopilot module), EFIS, etc.Help with chosing flight simulator game?
