As an alternative to M$ Flight $imulator try Xplane.
However as a semi professional pilot - I do like the flexibility of MS FSX in terms of ease of configuration of the plane and the ability to induce IMC weather situations and systems failures.
There are a number of add ons you can download for free - such as additional aircraft, buildings/landmarks and scenery packs.
For learning GA discipline MS-FSX will be fine, it can be hungry on graphics card and memory resources though.
